Item An inquiry into the level of technological adoption in Burundi : a case study of rice in Gihanga, pp. 137-175(UB, Cahiers du CURDES, 2010-08) NDIMANYA Patrice; NDAYITWAYEKO Willy MarcelThe study assessed the determinants of the technological adoption as well as the factors constraining the production of irrigated rice in the western of Burundi. One hundred and twenty rice producers were surveyed for the study. Descriptive statistics and logit models were used in the analyzing data collected. The results revealed that diseases and pests were the most dominant factor limiting the production of rice whereas the model of logit showed land size, dependency ratio, experience and to be a member of an association significantly influence the adoption of new variety of rice Vl 4 while education of conjoint (wife), dependency ratio and off-farm income contribute to the optimal application of urea, the most used inorganic fertilizer in rice production in Gihanga. To improve technological adoption in irrigated rice production, it is recommended that the agricultural policy should more emphasis on the importance of education crop diversification strategy and extension service in order to reduce the incidence of crop diseases and to boost the rice technical adoption.Item Aid efficiency in the socio-political instability context of Burundi : a Granger causality approach, pp. 134-148, Cahiers du CURDES(UB, Cahiers du CURDES, 2009-05) NKUNZIMANA Léonard; NDAYITWAYEKO Willy MarcelIn the last years, Burundi has become increasingly dependent on foreign aid has external investment to its economy, but as this country crossed a crucial periods of civil war, this paper attempts to gauge the determinants of efficiency of aid during the socio-political instability from 1990-2005. The time series data are drawn from various sources. The co-integration approach is applied in this study. From the empirics, it came out clearly that on hand, the foreign aid has an slightly positive effect on economic growth but a highly insignificant on the child mortality rate during this straining civil war; on the hand socio-political stability has a positively significant on child mortality rate but not on economic growth. We recommend that security, good governance and decentralised political governance are the prerequisite for the efficiency of foreign aid.Item A tale of fiscal decentralization and governance of Burundi, pp. 171-197,(Cahiers du CURDES, 2016-12) NDAYITWAYEKO Willy Marcel; NTUNZWENIMANA Jackson; NYAMWERU Jean-Claude,In 2005, the Government of Burundi took a series of piecemeal steps towards fiscal decentralization as an important approach to promote democratic space, economic growth and socio-political stability. This paper reports the process of fiscal decentralization and its plausible link with governance. A Model based on panel data analysis was estimated to explain the association between fiscal decentralization and some governance indicators in the 2010-2013 period. The estimation results reveal population and governance indicators to influence the fiscal decentralization reforms in Burundi. However, resource endowments were found to hinder such reforms. An effort should be devoted to comprehend the impact of these factors in order to design and implement proper fiscal decentralization policies.
